Summary

Melvin Belli, the Father of Demonstrative Evidence, pioneered innovative techniques to illustrate injuries and damages to the jury, helping them to better understand medical and technical information and the impact of injuries on the plaintiff. He changed how lawyers prepared and presented their cases at trial.

Randall Scarlett revisits Belli’s innovative use of demonstrative evidence in the context of today’s visual-rich environment to consider what is today’s effective use of demonstrative evidence, whether we are overloading jurors with demonstratives and when, where and how to effectively employ demonstratives at trial.
